Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes skills and knowledge required to write poetry in a range of forms including free verse, forms, anthologies, collections, verse novels, children’s books, dedications, odes, song lyrics, advertising copy, magazines and web-based material. Poetry may also be written for other occasions, radio, live performances, slams, TV and films.It applies to individuals who draw on different experiences and ideas to draft poems that may be performed or published. The process involves conception, drafting, redrafting and consideration of audience.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Element: Determine purpose, concept and intended form of output for poetic work
  • Identify purpose for preparing poetic work according to professional, creative or personal standards and guidelines
  • Develop concept for poetic work according to identified purpose, using a range of resources and techniques including journals, notebooks, interviews, writing exercises, observations, reading and research
  • Define form of output for poetic work according to its intended audience, style and format of poetic work
  • Determine language, tone and length of poetic work appropriate for the poetic work’s purpose, concept and form
  • Confirm purpose, concept and form of output with appropriate sources

  • Develop a timeline and approach for drafting and completing the poetic work
  • Research and gather information relating to the intended concept and form of the poetic work
  • Identify relevant copyright and intellectual property requirements
       
Element: Create draft poetic work
  • Use safe work practices including addressing ergonomic requirements when undertaking writing tasks
  • Draft the poetic work according to its identified purpose, concept and intended form of output
  • Evaluate and revise draft poetic work to ensure it meets the identified purpose, concept and intended form of output
  • Proofread draft poetic work to ensure grammar, punctuation and spelling are appropriate for concept and form of output

  • Seek, consider and use feedback from appropriate sources to ensure draft poetic work meets intended purpose, concept and form of output

Assessment Tasks
